Commissioner Sierra Dean was appointed to the Florida Commission on the Status of Women by Senate President Wilton Simpson in 2021. Coupled with a strong skillset in public affairs and communications, her passion for women and girls serves as an energizer to the commission.

Currently she serves as the Deputy Communications Director for the Florida Department of Education (FDOE). In her role, she supports the department’s aims for expanded knowledge and lifelong learning opportunities through the skillful development of internal and external communications strategies. Within the department, she previously led the outreach and recruitment efforts for statewide workforce education initiatives, Get There and Apprentice Florida. Prior to joining FDOE, she contributed to U.S.

Senator Rick Scott’s public offices as the Northwest Florida Regional Director from 2018-2021 and the Executive Office of the Governor’s Tampa Bay Regional Director in 2018. In these roles she developed and strengthened statewide relationships between community, business, civic, military and non-profit leaders.

Raised in Polk County, Sierra graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in Political Science and International Relations from the University of South Florida (USF). While attending USF, she worked to elevate women and girls through her volunteer involvement with USF Women in Leadership and Philanthropy, Pace Center for Girls and the Peace River Center. She was inducted to the Order of the Golden Brahman, and awarded the USF Golden Bull, one of the highest student honors.

Her career demonstrates experience in public affairs, policy, communications and most of all—a commitment to the well-being and advancement of Floridians.

The goal of this study is to identify key issues facing women, understand critical needs women and their communities perceive as important, build trust with constituents, and highlight the diverse viewpoints of all segments of the population from across the state.
