Susan Migueltorena
Tampa
Susan MiguelToreña (Tampa) was born to Cuban immigrants who were diplomats, a father who was part of the CIA at the time of her birth, began a trail of hardships growing up.
Life in the 60’s started with running from government officials seeking answers to government issues, hiding, and eventually abandonment. Going from foster home to foster home; street life became life’s lessons with hard life trails. However, there’s an old saying that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. That’s exactly what happened, she grew stronger.
By the age of 14 life had taken a toll on her and then a blessing came her way. Her parent put her in an all-girls boarding school in Willoughby Ohio. Those poor souls soon found out they had their hands full and began to mold her into today’s story. All credit goes to two wonderful teachers, Ms. Shearer, and Mrs. Shick, who never gave up on her and poured a positive mind-set by molding good morals into her life.
Susan left Andrews School with a Directors Ring in Fine Arts at the age of 18, along with an athletic jacket awarded for all her sports involvement. By the age of 21, she was recognized and awarded the Key to the City in Jefferson Parish in the state of Louisiana for working with run-away kids through the Sheriff Department “Green House” program.
Moving to Florida brought new adventures. Five biological children, Three stepchildren and many foster kids, for a total of15.Susan became a Director in the Child Care Profession running centers and helped introduce the High Scope and Title XX programs to childcare teachers and different centers throughout Hillsborough County.
Taking it up a notch she became a Level II Substitute Long Term teacher for children with special needs for Hillsborough County Public Schools and played that role until offered a position as a Truancy Officer and working with the community.
As a Community Specialist and Educator for Hillsborough County Public Schools it became the perfect role as it allowed her to help people find jobs, go back to school and start a new life. For 18 years she organized the back-to-school health event which facilitated over 3000 people each year. Her passion in helping women redefine themselves and impowering their future is the answer to a healthy life, not only for themselves, but for their children. The immigrant community is where her passion lies as she feels they are struggling to be excepted. In 2014 she opened her own Center to help with all of types of community needs, especially for women who are facing personal aspects to overcome life’s trails.
Susan works directly with the migrant community in many areas of immigration and has worked alongside State Representatives, United State Consulate of different Countries, and has been a guest speaker at the Senate in Tallahassee Florida.
