Lady Dhyana Ziegler, DCJ, Ph.D.
Lady Dhyana Ziegler DCJ, Ph.D. of Tallahassee was appointed to the Commission by Governor Rick Scott. Lady Dr. Dhyana Ziegler, DCJ is currently the President and CEO of Z/Creators, LLC. She has worked in the field of higher education and technology for more than 35 years. Previously, Dr. Ziegler served as the Garth C. Reeves Eminent Scholar Endowed Chair of Excellence and Interim Dean in the School of Journalism and Graphic Communication at Florida A&M University (FAMU). Other administrative positions at FAMU include: Acting Vice President for Research, Assistant Vice President for Instructional Technology and Distance Learning, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, Interim Director of the Office of International Education and Development, and Director of University Planning and Analysis. She also served for a brief period as Interim President of Florida Virtual School. Prior to joining FAMU, Dr. Ziegler was Professor of Broadcasting for 14 years at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and Associate Director for Diversity Resources and Educational Services supervising Research and Technology housed under the Office of the Chancellor. She is a Charter Inductee to the University of Tennessee African American Hall of Fame. She holds a Ph.D. in academic administration and M.A. in radio and television from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, a B.S. Cum Laude in journalism and music from Baruch College, City University of New York, and a post-doctoral certificate from the Harvard University’s School of Education’s Management and Leadership in Education Program (MLE).
During her tenure at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, Dr. Ziegler was President of the Black Faculty and Staff Association, Chair of the Commission for Blacks, Chair of the Commission of Women, and is the only African-American ever elected President of the Faculty Senate in the school’s history in 1994 and still maintains that honor to date in 2020. Additionally, she served as the Chair of the State of Tennessee Advisory Committee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights. Dr. Ziegler was also the Co-Chair of Higher Education for the Tennessee Legislative Black Caucus. She was a political panelist on “The Tennessee Report” on WATE-TV in Knoxville as well as a commentator on the news.
Dr. Ziegler is a seven-time Florida Governor’s Appointee by three different Governors. She was appointed five times to the Florida Virtual School Board of Trustees and twice to the Florida Commission on the Status of Women where she has the distinctive honor of being elected Chair of both entities. She is also a member of the Board of Directors for Florida Tax Watch as well as a member of the Tax Watch Center of Excellence for Education and Performance Accountability Advisory Board. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Southern Scholarship Foundation and has also served as Chair of the Board. She is a member of the Association of Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), Broadcast Education Association, and Past-National Chair of Education as well as Past-National Chair of Diversity for the Society of Professional Journalists (to name a few).
Dr. Ziegler is the author of four books, more than 60 scholarly publications including book chapters, refereed journal articles, professional publications, and has produced more than 100 videos and other multimedia productions. She has made presentations at more than 100 national and international conferences and has been awarded nearly 6.5 million dollars in grants. Dr. Ziegler has received numerous awards and recognitions for her contributions including being knighted as a Dame of Justice in England in 2008 and served as a member of the Oxford Roundtable. In 2012, she was honored as one of the Women of Distinction in the area of Education from the Girls Scouts of the Florida Panhandle, in 2014 was selected as one of the 2014 Trailblazers by the Oasis Center for Women and Girls, and was featured as one of the 2017 Women on the Move by ONYX Magazine. Additionally, Dr. Ziegler received the Legacy Leadership Award from the Florida Virtual School in 2017 (to name a few). She is a member of the Association of Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), Broadcast Education Association, and Past-National Chair of Education as well as Past-National Chair of Diversity for the Society of Professional Journalists. She is a member of Delta Theta Sigma Sorority, Inc. and other professional and honor organizations.
Besides her academic career, Dr. Ziegler is a multi-media writer and digital content producer of commercials, websites, corporate and political campaigns, documentaries, songs, lyrics, and other audio/visual works.Back
