Florida Women’s Hall of Fame Seeks Nominations for 2020

Tallahassee, FL (September 14, 2016) — The Florida Commission on the Status of Women is seeking entries for the 2017 Women’s History Essay Contest from students in grades 6–9. The Commission invites students to participate in order to gain a more relevant appreciation of women’s roles in history, and engage young minds of women’s role in the future. Since its inception in 1982, the Hall of Fame has recognized and honored Florida women who, through their lives and work, have made significant contributions to the improvement of life for all citizens of the state. Currently, there are 97 members of the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame, including former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, singer Gloria Estefan, internationally-honored tennis athletes Chris Evert and Althea Gibson, Pilot Betty Skelton Frankman, Bethune-Cookman College founder Mary McLeod Bethune, Congresswomen Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Carrie Meek, Tillie Fowler and Ruth Bryan Owen, Florida Trend Publisher Lynda Keever, and Everglades advocate and suffragist Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
“Celebrating women’s history presents the opportunity to honor and recount stories of our ancestors’ talents, sacrifices, and commitments and inspires today’s generations,” say Essay Contest Chair Commissioner Ekecia Taylor. “Learning about our past allows us to build our future. This essay is designed for youngsters to bring the future into the present and design the improvements they want to see in Florida through women.”
Winning essayists will be awarded prizes and recognized at a special ceremony at the 4th Annual Women’s Day at the Capitol in Tallahassee in March 2017. All winners’ names will be released to the media and published on the Commission’s website. The deadline for entry is December 2, 2016.
The Florida Commission on the Status of Women is a nonpartisan board, statutorily created in 1991 consisting of 22 appointed members, administratively housed in the Office of the Attorney General, Pam Bondi.
